On tillering wood

You take a little off, you shoot it, you take a little more off. Every stave has its own opinion about how it wants to bend, and arguing with it just breaks the bow. The whole process is basically a long negotiation with a piece of wood that was, until recently, a tree.

Why the old consoles still feel better

Not nostalgia — or not only nostalgia. There's something about a cartridge you can hold, a console with exactly one job, and a library that ends somewhere. A modern library never quite gives you that feeling of being finished with a shelf.

The garden always wins

Every year I plant with a plan. Every year the tomatoes decide the plan was a suggestion. At some point you stop fighting it and just start harvesting whatever showed up.
